Our Story – Northfield Country Club in Central Vermont

Nearly a Century of Golfing Tradition

Northfield Country Club welcomes players of any type, whether a seasoned golfer or a beginner. We want you to feel welcomed from the time you pull into the parking lot. We may be a small town club, but are continually striving to do better whether it be on the course or off.
Established in 1927 and lovingly restored in recent years, Northfield Country Club is more than a golf course—it’s a reflection of the community spirit of Central Vermont. Located just minutes from Montpelier and Barre, the club has become a gathering place for generations of golfers.

Tracing Northfield Country Club’s origins from humble beginnings to a revived local treasure

1927 – Golf Begins in Northfield

Two 15-year-olds, Jack Morse and Homer Denny, begin playing on a makeshift sod course at the Sanborn Cottage on Turkey Hill. Their enthusiasm helps spark early interest in golf within the local community.

Late 1920s – Club Formation

A committee of local business leaders forms a plan to establish a real course. The Hebert Freeman house and farmland near the Harlow Bridge is selected as the site.

1930s – Volunteer-Built Course Opens

Nine dedicated golfers each take responsibility for designing and building one hole of the original 9-hole layout. Local pro Lester Heon begins offering lessons even before the course is completed.

1940s – WWII & Club Survival

Despite member deployments during World War II, James Cruikshank and John Moseley keep the club alive, maintaining the grounds and organizing local matches.

1950s–1980s – Generational Growth

Families including the Fernandez, Denny, Cruikshank, Wright, and Tracy names become deeply involved in club operations. Trees are planted, and the clubhouse is expanded and modernized.

2011 – Tropical Storm Irene

Severe flooding from Tropical Storm Irene damages bridges and multiple fairways. The club endures extensive disruption but rebuilds thanks to community support.

2020 – Club Purchased by Ted Hoehn

With the course in danger of closure due to bankruptcy, local resident Ted Hoehn acquires the property and begins revitalizing both the course and clubhouse.

2020–2025 – Revitalization & Expansion

New investment improves course conditions, introduces digital tee booking, and expands services including leagues, tournaments, and junior programs.
